Windows 11 Announcement

Windows 11 marked Microsoft's first major OS redesign in over five years—a globally streamed virtual event unveiling a centered Start menu, rounded corners, Snap layouts, and a modern, streamlined design language aimed at boosting productivity and creativity. Major updates to the Microsoft Store and Android app support reflected a renewed focus on openness. The launch generated significant global buzz, trended worldwide, and drew millions of live and post-event views, successfully repositioning Windows as a modern, user-centric platform and setting the tone for Microsoft’s next design chapter.

My role

As Visual Communications Director for the Windows + Devices organization, I partnered with the Communications Director to lead the development of the event’s visual and narrative strategy, acting as the connective tissue between Windows engineering, design, marketing, and event production teams. I ensured that every visual element—from digital backdrops and talent wardrobes to demo videos and on-screen graphics—reflected the new Windows 11 design language. The digital format demanded precise visual storytelling and tight cross-team coordination, and I helped craft an experience that balanced inspiration with clarity, aligning the emotional arc of the event with the bold, user-centric vision of Windows 11.

A major focus of mine for this event was the UI animations. Because Windows 11 introduced an entirely new visual and motion system, I often took a hands-on role in video editing to maintain quality, ensure clarity, and protect the integrity of unreleased features. At the same time, I served as the primary point of contact and creative director, coordinating across Windows UX designers and external creative agencies to deliver the extensive set of animations needed to showcase the new experience.

Each speaker’s environment was intentionally designed to reflect and amplify their key messages. Panos Panay, focused on the new design and UI of Windows 11, presented from a dynamic digital space that shifted in shape and color to mirror the OS’s new forms and textures. Carmen and Phillip, who demoed live coding scenarios, were placed in relatable environments—such as working from a home office or relaxing on a couch—to showcase real-world use cases in an authentic, accessible way.
